A Simple and Convenient Synthesis of Pseudoephedrine From N-Methylamphetamine

My favorite journal, Journal of Apocryphal Chemistry, has just published an interesting article.  The authors, O. Hai and I. B. Hakkenshit, describe a synthesis of pseudoephedrine from readily available crystal meth.  Pseudoephedrine is the decongestant in Sudafed, which used to be out on stores shelves.  Now if you want to buy it you have to show your drivers license at a pharmacy.  This synthesis should make it much easier to get this useful medicine.

  1. Many thanks for pointing out this lovely manuscript by O. Hai and I. B. Hakkenshit. Their work is highly relevant to the current state of affairs and regulations.

By publishing this work, it seems that the Journal of Apocryphal Chemistry is efficiently positioning itself among the top apocryphal open access journals for chemists.

    Keep up this great stuff!

  7. Hai and Hakkenshit fail to mention the required apparatus. Can this synthesis be executed in a soda bottle, or in a cheap motel room, or in the trunk of a rusted-out car?

    • I had the chance to talk with the authors recently and I believe that they have been using a Schlenk line and glassware under nitrogen atmosphere. However they are champions of home brewed technology and are hoping to simplify the methodology. If they succeed I would expect that trailer homes would be the preferred apparatus.
